How much does a website redesign cost in 2026? Prices by scope, hidden costs and keeping your rankings

A redesign can mean a fresh coat of paint or a new site on a new platform. The price follows the scope, and the expensive mistakes are the ones you don't see on the invoice: lost redirects, lost content and lost traffic.

Key takeaways

  • Clutch's data on reviewed web design projects (updated September 21, 2026): most cost less than $10,000, the average is $38,105, and agencies in the US, Canada and Australia typically charge $100–$149 an hour.
  • At our published prices, a redesign starts from $990 for a one-page site on our template, $5,000 for a 5–10 page business website and $6,000 for a Shopify store.
  • Scope drives the price: the number of page types, who writes the content, integrations, and whether you change platform or URLs.
  • To keep your rankings, Google says to map every old URL, use permanent (301 or 308) redirects and keep them generally at least one year.
  • AI builders can now rebuild a site's visible pages from its URL, but not its CMS, forms or sign-in behavior. Budget for those separately.

The short answer: at studios like ours, a real website redesign in 2026 is priced like building that website new, because it redoes the design, the content and the build. For a small business, that usually means a few thousand dollars for a single page or a 5–10 page site, and more once you add an online store migration, custom features or a platform change; larger custom builds reach five figures. Clutch reports that most web design projects reviewed on its platform cost less than $10,000, while the average across those projects is $38,105, a figure that larger builds push up (Clutch, updated September 21, 2026).

The tables below break the price down by scope, list the costs that are easy to forget, and give the steps that stop a new design from losing the Google traffic the old one earned.

Methodology: this is an editorial guide, not a survey. Market figures come from the sources linked, checked on October 30, 2026; Clutch's figures cover web design projects in general, not redesigns only. Our own prices come from our pricing page.

Refresh, redesign or rebuild: which one are you buying?

Quotes vary wildly because people use "redesign" for three different jobs. Decide which one you need before you compare prices.

JobWhat changesWhen it fitsRelative cost
RefreshColors, fonts, images, a few layouts. Same pages, URLs and platform. The site works and ranks, it just looks dated.Lowest
RedesignNew design and structure, rewritten key pages, same or similar platform. The site doesn't convert visitors, explain the offer or work well on phones.About the price of a new site
Rebuild / replatformNew platform or code, new URLs, content and data migrated. The platform blocks you: slow, hard to edit, insecure plugins, or no store or booking features.Highest: a new site plus migration

A refresh is often enough when traffic and leads are fine. If leads are the problem, a refresh only makes the same problem look newer.

Website redesign prices by scope

These are our published starting prices for building the site again. "From" means the smallest sensible version; the written quote rises with scope.

ScopeWhat you getOur price
One-page site on a templateStarter Landing: one page on our premium template, live in 7 daysfrom $990
Custom single pageLanding Page: custom-designed, conversion-focusedfrom $2,000
Small business websiteBusiness Website: 5–10 pages, booking, SEO foundationsfrom $5,000
Online storeE-commerce (Shopify): store setup, design, payments, product pagesfrom $6,000
Showcase site with 3D and motionPremium 3D Website: cinematic motion and 3D storytellingfrom $12,000
Care after launchWebsite Care Plan: hosting, updates, backups, speed and small edits$199/month

For comparison, Clutch lists typical hourly rates of $100–$149 for web design companies in the US, Canada and Australia, $50–$99 in the UK, and $25–$49 for work on website builders such as Wix, WordPress, Squarespace, Webflow and Shopify (Clutch). Hourly quotes are easier to compare once you know how many hours each page type takes; fixed quotes are easier to budget.

What drives the price of a redesign

  • Page types, not page count. Ten service pages that share one layout cost far less than ten pages that each need their own design. Count templates: home, service, location, blog post, product, contact.
  • Content. New copy, photography and video are often the biggest line nobody planned for. Reusing good existing content keeps the price down; writing every page from scratch does not.
  • Integrations. Booking, CRM, payment, chat, maps, reviews and email marketing each need setup and testing.
  • Platform change. Moving from one platform to another means migrating content and data and redirecting every URL.
  • E-commerce data. Products, variants, customers, orders and reviews have to move with the store, and every product URL needs a redirect.
  • Accessibility and legal requirements. If you sell to consumers in the EU, the European Accessibility Act covers e-commerce services and came into effect on June 28, 2025 (AccessibleEU; European Commission). Microenterprises providing services (fewer than 10 employees and annual turnover or balance sheet total of no more than EUR 2 million) are exempt from the service accessibility requirements (Directive (EU) 2019/882, Article 4(5); definition in Article 3). Even when you are exempt, an accessible site reaches more customers, and a redesign is the cheapest moment to get this right.
  • Speed targets. Google's Core Web Vitals call a page good when Largest Contentful Paint is within 2.5 seconds, Interaction to Next Paint is 200 milliseconds or less and Cumulative Layout Shift is 0.1 or less, measured at the 75th percentile of page loads (web.dev). Heavy sliders, video and animation make those targets more expensive to hit.

The costs that don't show up in the quote

CostWhy it mattersHow to handle it
Content and photosA new design with old, thin copy still converts poorly.Ask whether copywriting is included, and for how many pages.
Redirect mapChanged URLs without redirects lose rankings and break links from other sites.Make the redirect map a named deliverable in the quote.
Platform and app feesBuilders, themes, plugins and store apps bill monthly or yearly.List every subscription the new site needs before you sign.
MaintenanceSites need updates, backups and fixes after launch.Budget a care plan or in-house time from day one.
TrackingAnalytics, ads pixels and conversion events often break during a rebuild.Test every form and conversion event before launch.

Maintenance is not a formality on plugin-heavy sites. Patchstack counted 11,334 new vulnerabilities in the WordPress ecosystem in 2025, and 91% of them were in plugins (Patchstack, February 25, 2026). That is not a reason to avoid WordPress, but it is a reason to use fewer plugins and to keep someone responsible for updates.

Can an AI builder redesign your site instead?

Partly. AI app builders can now take a public page and rebuild it as a project you keep editing. As of October 30, 2026, Lovable's import page offers the first website or project import free until you see a working preview; edits and further imports after that use credits. The same page sets out the limit clearly: website import "rebuilds what visitors see, not CMS, form, or sign-in behavior", data and users need separate exports, and passwords and active sessions don't transfer (Lovable).

That makes an AI rebuild a fast way to explore a new look. It does not replace the parts of a redesign that protect the business: a way for your team to edit content, working forms and bookings, the redirect map, tracking, accessibility and security. If you take this route, run the checks in our guide to making an AI-built app production-ready before you point your domain at it.

How to redesign without losing Google traffic

Google's guidance on site moves with URL changes is short and specific (Google Search Central, updated August 20, 2026). Applied to a redesign, it becomes these steps:

  1. Export what ranks today. In Google Search Console, download the pages and queries that bring clicks and impressions. These pages keep their content, or get a close equivalent, on the new site.
  2. List every old URL. Use your sitemap, Search Console and a crawl of the live site, including blog posts, product pages and PDFs.
  3. Build a URL map. One row per old URL with its new URL. Where a page is dropped, redirect to the closest relevant page, not to the homepage.
  4. Build and test on a staging site that search engines can't index, then check titles, headings, internal links, forms and Core Web Vitals before launch.
  5. Launch with permanent redirects. Google recommends HTTP permanent redirects such as 301 and 308, and to keep them "for as long as possible, generally at least 1 year."
  6. Submit the new sitemap and monitor. Watch traffic on old and new URLs in Search Console. Google warns that "you may experience ranking fluctuations while Google recrawls and reindexes your site," so judge the result over weeks, not days.

If URLs and content stay the same and only the design changes, most of this list shrinks to testing, but the export in step 1 is still worth doing as a baseline.

Signs it's time to redesign

  • Visitors arrive but don't call, book or buy, and the analytics show them leaving the key pages.
  • The site is hard to use on a phone, or fails Core Web Vitals in Search Console.
  • Your offer, prices or audience have changed and the site still describes the old business.
  • Simple edits need a developer, or every plugin update breaks something.
  • You need a feature the platform can't do well: booking, a store, a client portal or AI chat.

If none of these apply and the site brings leads, a refresh or a focused landing page for a new campaign may be the better spend.

FAQ

Is a website redesign cheaper than building a new site?

Usually not by much. Most of the cost of a website is design, content and building the pages, and a real redesign redoes all three. What you save is the thinking that already exists: your content, your traffic data and what you know about your customers. A visual refresh that keeps the same pages and platform is the cheaper option.

Will a website redesign hurt my Google rankings?

It can if URLs change without redirects or if content that ranked is removed. Google's site move guidance says to map every old URL to its new one, use permanent 301 or 308 redirects, keep them for as long as possible and generally at least one year, and to expect some ranking fluctuation while Google recrawls the site.

Can an AI tool redesign my website for free?

AI builders can now rebuild the visible pages of a public site. As of October 30, 2026, Lovable's import page offers the first website import free until you see a working preview, with credits charged after that, and it states that import rebuilds what visitors see, not CMS, form or sign-in behavior. Content management, forms, redirects and tracking still have to be set up and checked.

How long does a website redesign take?

It depends on the number of page types, content and integrations. As a reference point, our one-page Starter Landing on a template goes live in 7 days, and our Launch Kit (a landing page or 5-page site with booking and SEO foundations) in 3 weeks. Platform changes and online stores take longer because products, customers and redirects have to move too.
